Treating Teen Obesity Dr. Travis Stork: We decided to send Italia and her mom to visit Dr. Philip Goglia. He’s the author of Turn “Up the Heat”. Dr. Goglia is a nutritionist. He specializes in helping children and adults overcome their serious weight problems. Dr. Philip Goglia: Today we’re going to assess Gina and Italia’s food program. Their metabolic structure and type and then review their health history and then design a food program for them. And stay on the scale until it beeps -- 243 flat. We’re here to focus on Italia’s food program but I think it’s so important to work with the parents as well because I think parents lead by example. Everything you think you know about nutrition, I want you to take an eraser too and erase it all because we’re going to start fresh. Done, have a seat. This is five pounds of fat. Italia: No. Dr. Philip Goglia: Now hold it. Come on go on and hold it. This is five pounds of muscle. This is different fat on food. Here’s a double cheeseburger, apple, cheeseburgers. I think the potential is huge. I think they can both have straight weight loss. We’re going to get both of you guys on board. Gina: Thank you so much. Italia: Thank you. Dr. Travis Stork: Italia and her mom Gina are here today along with Dr. Goglia. He’s the founder of fitness concepts in Sta. Monica, California. Thank you all so much for being with us. Dr. Jim Sears: So Italia why do you think you eat so much? Italia: Well, we’ve had a lot of stress going on lately and when I’m stressed, I tend to eat a lot so -- Dr. Travis Stork: So a lot of times we eat things, we don’t realize how much fat is in them. Dr. Philip Goglia: For instance trail mix Dr. Jim Sears: Trail mix? Dr. Philip Goglia: Trail mix, that -- Dr. Jim Sears: I’m in trouble. Dr. Philip Goglia: That’s a lot of fat in trail mix. Yet for those fast food folks there is a double cheeseburger. A lot of fat found on that. And fat’s interesting because it takes up a lot of room and it doesn’t weigh much. This is five pounds of fat yet this is five pounds of muscle. So you can see the difference in size. So really the goal is to weigh as much as you can per square inch just to have less square inches on you to take up lesser room. Dr. Jim Sears: Now, Dr. G, you did a lot of test on Italia, why don’t you go through those results. Dr. Philip Goglia: Well, we run a full of her profile test on Italia and her body composition test as well. And the body composition test was interesting. We discovered that she carries about 121 pounds of lean tissue on her frame muscle and about 121 pounds of fat on her frame as well. Right now, her body fat percentage is 49%. Dr. Jim Sears: That’s almost half. Dr. Philip Goglia: Almost half and our goal is 20. Dr. Jim Sears: So I know you have a clinic that specializes in helping kids lose weight. Are you willing to help this family? Dr. Philip Goglia: I’m committed, totally committed. I was overweight myself as a child, 240 pounds in seventh grade, so I get it. I mean it. I’m on the program. Dr. Jim Sears: Right and I know I’ve lost all the weight myself. Gina and Italia, are you guys willing to take Dr. G’s help? Gina: Absolutely, I’m -- Dr. Jim Sears: Cool. Gina: -- whatever it takes. Dr. Jim Sears: You’re going to have to do whatever it takes because it’s really, really important. Dr. Travis Stork: And we also have some help. We have Atlanta’s Health Club. We’re going to give you free gym membership as well as five personal training sessions a week for you and a friend. Dance classes from Music Studio Dance and big attitude finish where they’re providing with over $500.00 worth of fitness clothes. And one last itty-bitty surprise. We heard that Italia’s a huge fan of Disney singing star Demi Lovato so we contacted Demi who’s on tour but she wanted to talk to you so she’s on the phone, Demi are you there? Demi Lovato: Hi. How are you? Dr. Travis Stork: We’re doing good! We got Italia here. Demi Lova
