Transgender Explained On behalf of tvlesson.com, I'm Dr. Carol Clark, a sex therapist with drcarolclark.com. Let’s talk a little bit about what is transgender. Transgender has become an umbrella term for cross dressing and for transsexuality. Transgender can mean anything that has to do with crossing over or blending the lines from one gender to the other. In our society, we have very clear ideas of stereotypical gender behavior and what it means to be male or female. We start categorizing children from before they were born, we find out what sex are they. And this is based on what genitals they happen to have. Generally, our genitals match our sex in the sense of xx, or xy and then our brains matched our body sex. But a lot of people have transgender thoughts or feelings where they're not so stereotypically one thing or the other. We all have feelings of wanting to do something that is associated with the other sex at times. And these are transgender thoughts, Trans meaning moving from one to the other. Some people take it a little bit further and they dress in clothing of the other sex, some people behave in ways associated with the other sex. So they make take jobs that are traditionally the other sex. That’s becoming more and more accepted these days, men are nurses. Women are welders. So this is transgender behavior. When we go to the extreme of transsexuality, we have someone who is really feeling like they're brain sex does not match their body sex. And that’s a little bit about transgender. On behalf of tvlesson.com, this has been Dr. Carol Clark. Thank you for watching.
