Hi, welcome to mommy maters. I'm Shannon with babyessentials.com here today to talk to you about how to select a pediatrician. Important topic and someone that you're going to have a really tight relationship with that you really want to like. Here are some good tips on how to find a pediatrician. You want to start off with someone thinking about the criteria of what you're going to need. You need someone who’s close to your home or your work or maybe even your childcare geographically speaking. And you want to make sure that the office is open hours that you can get there, so just basic logistics. Beyond that, you want someone that’s going to be supportive of your decisions that you make and philosophies that you're going to in to this with. A great place to start is to ask girlfriends for a recommend. This is a time when you don’t want to open the yellow pages. You want to hear from someone that they just love their pediatrician and why. And if that person seems like they’ve got similar philosophies to you, it's a great place to start. You definitely want to interview more than one pediatrician. If you hear rave reviews about one person, that’s great but you want something to compare to. So, definitely plan on speaking on the phone at the very least with at least three pediatricians. And then once you narrow it down, you definitely want to go in person to the pediatrician’s office. Have a look around, make sure it's clean. Make sure that they have two waiting rooms, one for the sick kids and one for the healthy kids. It's a nice perk but it's really actually I would—a lot of people find that to be a deal breaker. You need to have a two separate waiting room to just feel comfortable that you're not going to get infected when you go in for a well-baby visit. These are things that you want to get in there and see for yourself. The other thing is, you want to meet with the office staff. Are they going to be respective when you call and you're the first time mom with a burning question that they’ve heard a hundred times? You want them to be you know kind and patient and you want to see if the office seems to be running on time with a lot of—people in the waiting room or does things seem to be going like hackwork. So, a lot of important tips there, the other thing is to keep in mind you want to—once you get down to the final selection, make sure that you're going to check the background of your doctor really. You're going to check with your state medical board. Make sure they don’t have any serious disciplinary action and find out what those are. So, in that case, if you're interested in finding out more information, you can go to our website babyessentials.com and find the links for your medical board. The other thing is, you want to keep in mind that there is—you're not married to those persons. If you get in after baby’s born, you’ve made your selection but for any reason you're not comfortable, you can certainly move on. Interview other pediatricians or just get a second opinion.
