If a woman is taking estrogen, what is the value of taking progesterone? Dr. Heward: The value of progesterone is that it, it counters the effect of estrogen on another tissue, other than the breast, that also responds in terms of its atrophic effect to the presence of estrogen and that’s the uterus. So the uterus is also a target tissue for the estrogen and if you have a tumor, a uterine cancer then, that will grow faster too, and so the value of taking progesterone is it counters the effect of estrogen on the uterus by maintaining the normal cyclical process in the female, and so it protects against uterine cancer in women who are taking estrogen replacement therapy. So, again, kind of intuitively, when you think about how to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible, when you’re 50 years old and facing menopause, you think about what you look like biochemically and physiologically. As a healthy 25-year-old, you were cycling progesterone and getting estrogen in a way you want to continue for the rest of your life and so, that probably means cycling progesterone and continuing estrogen in a way that as closely matches that youthful 25 year-old pattern as possible.
