The Usefulness of Ice for Back Pain Ice is useful in the first 24 to 48 hours when the body is sending all these cells and causing inflammation. Once you’re out of that window, you can use heat or you could ice. The only caution I tell people is don’t heat use heat in the first 24 or 48 hours because it’ll increase the amount of blood and cells that come to the area that increase inflammation.
