The Types of Endometrial Cancer Endometrial cancer is a cancer of the uterus itself or the womb, the organ that holds the pregnancy. Specifically, endometrial cancer is the lining of the uterus, the inner lining, the lining that a woman menstruates or has a period from and sloughs off every month when she does have her period. That lining can develop a cancer and that’s what an endometrial cancer is. There are different types of endometrial cancers. The most common, 85 percent of endometrial cancers are called endometrioid adenocarcinoma, and that’s by far the most common type of cancer of the uterus. But there are more atypical or unusual cancers of the lining of the uterus such as a serious papillary carcinoma of the uterus or clear cell carcinoma of the uterus and they are managed very differently. So again, it’s important that you get to a center such as Mayo Clinic where we deal with these types of cancers and know how to properly manage these cancers.
