The Safest Sleeping Position for Your Baby Male: You are at chapter about infant sleep safety. What would be the proper position to put the child into a crib to sleep, on the stomach or the side or the back? Dr Schulman: We encourage all babies to be place on their backs unless they have some specific issues with their airways. All babies should be on back not on the side and not on the stomach. It’s been shown that the safest place for baby is sleeping on their back. We also like to clear the decks of the cribs, so there's nothing on the crib but the sheet. Male: Several question. You want the crib clear not a lot of things over the kid or things that we pulled over the kids. Is that true? Dr Schulman: That’s right, nothing in the crib but the baby and the sheet and maybe a very light receiving blanket. And if it’s a cold night, just put him in a warmer blanket.
