Speaker: What are fats? Jeannette Bessinger: Along with proteins and carbohydrates, fat is one of the three main macro nutrients, the components that come from food. Fat is very concentrated energy source. In the body, fat helps to make up the membranes with the cells of all of our different tissues. It also sends a signal of satiety to our brain that means satisfaction or fullness. So, it's very important to have a small amount of fat in your food, so that you know that actually you're not hungry any more that you're reaching fullness. Fat also carries the tastes and the smells of our food, so it makes eating a richer experience.
