What is the relationship between vitamin D and ovarian cancer? Dr. Cedric Garland: We don’t have as many studies for ovarian cancer as we do for cancers of the breast and colon, but we do have one excellent study conducted in the Nurse’s Health Group by a doctor named Dr. Turager, and from that study we know that the higher the level of vitamin D in the serum, 25 vitamin D it’s called-, the lower the incidence of ovarian cancer. So it is something the woman can do. She can determine her level of vitamin D by a test that takes putting a few drops on a blotter of blood, and then she can take a few more steps in her life to increase her amount of vitamin D. If she decides to go outdoors for 10 minutes a day to do it, we recommend wearing a big hat and getting the protection that the hat provides from the sun, keeping sunscreen in the pocket, and also deciding on the combination with close consultation with medical professionals.
