Dr. Neal Schultz: Hello, I'm Dr. Neal Schultz, and welcome to the DermTV. Today we're going to discuss what has to be the most confusing subjects in all of skin care. And that has to do with if you're using multiple products at the same time, in what order do you apply your products? You have heard me say time and time again, always apply sunscreen first, something there are actually exceptions even to that rule, and it's all based on the fact that the order of application of your products depends on the vehicle the product is in. All of your skincare products consist of an active ingredient like the molecule of the sunscreen, which is then dissolved in a lotion or a cream or an ointment, which is the vehicle. And the rule to take away from today is your skin care products that are lighter in weight like lotions and watery products are applied first. The heavier ones like creams are applied second and the heaviest ones that are thicker or like ointments are applied last. Let me show you what I mean, this is a very light vehicled skin care product, the red is a heavier skin care product and here you see the lighter one sitting on top of the heavier one. If you put the red one on first and then put the white one on, the white one can't penetrate through the red one to get the active ingredients to your skin. On the other hand, if you put the lighter one on first and then put the heavier one on, the heavier one can then penetrate through the lighter one to be absorbed into your skin and I'll show you how. So, here we're putting the heavier one on second and it goes right through and passed the lighter one so it can absorb into your skin. So, the bottom line is if you're using multiple skin care products at the same time, apply the lightest one first, the heavier one next and the heaviest one last, so that your skin can get the benefit of all the products and all the active ingredients.
