Female Speaker: How is the new food pyramid different from the old pyramid? Tracee Yablon-Brenner: The new food pyramid has vertical strips of different colors and each color signifies a different food whereas the old food pyramid was stacked with different foods. They also mentioned how many servings of food you need a day, but the new food pyramid, you have to have internet access to see what the color signify and how much you need each day for your diet. The new food pyramid, you can actually, put in your height and weight and you will find out how many fruits and vegetables you need daily, which the old food pyramid didn't do. The new food pyramid also talks about whole grains, having at least half whole grains in your diet but they still allow for refined carbohydrate and refined carbohydrate turns into sugar into your body quickly, which really, is not very healthy. The new food pyramid has stairs going up the pyramid which signifies increase in your activity level which is very important. The old food pyramid did not talk about exercise at all. It s great that the new food pyramid is because changing your eating habits is just as important as exercising.
