Narrator: If you’ve ever tried to diet away a few pounds chances are you’ve counted calories. Common sense would tell us that there are fewer calories in fresh fruit and veggie produce than there are in a juicy burger with a side of fat fries. A meal like this could you cost you half your daily calorie intake. It’s worth over 1000 calories all up even minus the mayonnaise that’s still 900 calories. All you need in a day is 2500. Cheese is another biggie on the calorie counter. It is good for you just try not to over indulge. Ricotta is not as calorie rich as some cheeses, but it’s still up there. Try cooking without oil—poach, broiled or grill instead. For a fresh, nutritious, low cal snack try some plump field mushrooms. They come in at a mere 15 calories per cup. Avocados have got all the right fats, but come at a large calorie expense. Use sparingly if you're trying to slim down. Eating out? Opt for the steamed rice. Fried rice has twice as many calories. You want to leave space for dessert. As a rule, fresh is generally best when it comes to counting calories. As soon as you start adding in processed food and fried up goodies, you're in-built calorimeter may have a mini meltdown. It’s that time of the year again. Everyone is coughing and splattering with the latest bug. Temperatures are high, throats are scratchy and noses are running like a broken tap. With all the wonders of modern medicine, nobody has yet come up with a cure for the common cold. It’s no use reaching for the antibiotics. These only work against bacteria. Colds are caused by viruses. Nope, there’s nothing for it but to wait it out with plenty of bed rest and fluids, and perhaps a little something to stop the persistent drip, drip, drip. Children are particularly vulnerable to fever associated with colds and flu. Dr. June Raine: This is about the best way to treat cough and cold, miserable conditions in small children under two. And our advice for pediatricians is to use the plain tried and trusted paracetamol and ibuprofen rather than some of the cough suppressants or anti-histamines that small children might be particularly sensitive to. Narrator: Colds are a major downer but there’s really not much you can do. It’s a good excuse to curl up in bed for a while. You know what it’s like. You're out there playing sports and then at the most inopportune moment you're legs seizes up with incredible pain. Cramps, where do they spring from? We’ve come a long way from believing that muscle cramps are caused by lack of salt. The minerals involved with the movement of muscles are potassium, calcium and magnesium. So if you're cramping up it makes more sense that you're short on one of these. Cramps can also be a sign that the arteries in your legs are narrowing. Time for a cholesterol test. General wear and tear on joints can lead to cramps also as they can press the nerves and send shooting pain called sciatica down the backs of your thighs. It’s operable in some cases and able to be alleviated with yoga in mild cases. In fact, stretching and flexing in general is a very good way to get rid of a painful cramp. Most people reach for the garlic to stay off of cold, but homemade French onion soup is a great homeopathic way to stop a runny nose.
