The Importance of Skylabs The year is 1973. Man’s first time in space Skylab is in orbit. Dropped the three Skylab missions, flight crews conducted experiments in medicine, earth observation, engineering, solar physics and astrophysics. The technology developed during Skylab provided the bases for the design and development of future long duration’s space stations. In addition to providing a laboratory for important studies, Skylab marked the significant transition in the space flight program. In each Skylab mission, astronauts became workers rather than observers. Sky levels are provided with a testing ground for techniques and equipment that would be needed for men to work effectively in space. One of the tools tested, the astronaut maneuvering unit would prove its usefulness on future flights of the space shuttle. The astronaut maneuvering unit tested on Skylab is now known as the man maneuvering unit or MMU. Its first test on space is about to begin. Here, astronaut McKinley’s was over 100 meters out from the space craft. He had proven the man maneuvering unit could be flown in space and he simulated something very important. He traveled the same distance another astronaut would have to travel two months later to get from the shuttle to an island NASA satellite.
