The Importance of Iron And Folic Acid For Expectant Mothers In a pregnancy you have a certain what we call a hemopoietic load or stress on your bone marrow, your ability to make red blood cells and other critical cells your pregnancy needs or requires. When you have a multiple gestation, you have even an increasing stress or workload and that needs to be replaced with additional iron and folic acid, and those are the two primary elements that can’t be made up in a normal diet in a normal pregnancy. So you need supplementation even with a singleton; you need some additional supplementation with a multiple gestation.
