Male Speaker: Does the government have a role in the treatment of obesity? Dr. William McCarthy: Anytime we talk about government role, we talk about controversy. The government, I am sure, the average person is not going to want Uncle Sam to tell them exactly how much they can eat, where they can eat or what they can eat. However, the government does have a major role. The first role of the government is education, to educate Physicians, to educate parents, to educate children to start working in schools as far as the type of foods that are served, the type of physical activity that is provided for children. The next area the government has to do is research. Right now, obese and overweight people have very say so in capital hill. There is very little advocacy for the obese. We see much more for diabetes, for HIV, for cancers, in spite of the fact that obesity is the number one health problem worldwide.
