Female Speaker: The virus is at its most devastating in Africa where 1 million children have HIV, close to 12 million people have died in South Africa alone. The virus is spreading unchecked with approximately the same number of woman infected as man. Dr. Mark Kline: In much of the developing world HIV is predominantly it is an infection transmitted heterosexually, which means that there are more infected women and of course women are giving birth to infected babies. Female Speaker: In parts of Southern Africa 30% of all women of child bearing age are infected with the virus. The rate of transmission from mother to child is 50%, meanwhile there are still children getting very sick in the United States but deaths here are becoming much less frequent. For example, in 1999, no children died at the Texas Children's Hospital Clinic that kind of success is what keeps healthcare providers going.
