Lyle: It's a pleasure to be talking with Dr. Flora Stay. Dr. Stay is a formulator of both oral and personal care products. And I like to ask Dr. Stay how can we really be sure of the products that we buy and their advocacy in safety? Flora: That is a very good question Lyle, education is a very big part of a- to help consumers become informed purchases of products. Unfortunately the most consumers rely on clever marketing and beautiful packages and that type if thing. And really are not that concerned about the ingredients. So our job is to really help them understand how ingredient can make a major difference. Because as they are using it on their skin and in their mouth. And – gets absorbed into the body, it can have side effects. Lyle: So it can have positive but it can also have negative consequences. Flora: Yes. Lyle: Even during in innocuous types of things like lipstick or skin cream? Flora: Yes, in fact lipstick has been in the new lately. It has many other products that are might contain toxic ingredients. The skin and the mouth are two of the fastest routes of absorbing anything into our body. So the ingredients that we use have to be very discretely, very wisely chosen specially for children, adults. Unless you know that, they are a lot of drugs that are entering to the body through the skin and underneath the tongue. Lyle: That’s right. Flora: Nitro-glycerin is used under the tongue; morphine for pain is used under the tongue. Tobacco patches, nicotine patches, birth control patches. So it's very important that consumers become informed and then make wise decisions for their families. Lyle: So we need to educate ourselves to understand as much as we can about ingredients? We need to know who were purchasing from. And we need to know what the long-term effects positive or negative can be for those ingredients and for those products. Flora: Yes and I am very happy that there is a watchdog organization now for consumers. The campaign for safe cosmetics who is in – under the umbrella of environmental working group. Lyle: Why not we come back and talk a little more about the campaign for better cosmetics safer cosmetics. I think that would be very important. Thank you. Flora: Thank you.
