The Dynamics of Existence Part 1/5 Laura Wells: From the flying abilities of birds to the hauling power of insects. Scientists and Engineers have long studied living organisms with great fascination. Their work have lead not only to exciting new technologies but also a deeper understanding that the principles that tie together our world. Hello and welcome to Matter and Beyond. I’m your host Laura Wells. On this episode we visit Professor Mehmet Pakdemirli, an expert in applied mathematics in the science of motion. Together we will explore some of his thoughts and reflections on both the outer and inner dynamics of existence. Male: Born in Angora, Turkey in 1965. Dr. Mehmet Pakdemirli graduated from both Bogazici University, Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1985. And two years later, he earned his Master’s Degree from the same department. He continued his education receiving his PhD from Istanbul Technical University. He then continued his post Doctorate Studies for two years at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He currently holds a teaching position at Chalil Vihar University in Turkey. Dr. Pakdemirli research area is applied mechanics specializing in the study of mechanical vibrations and fluid mechanics and lecturing on fluid mechanics and on the strength of materials. In dynamics, Dr. Pakdermirli explains the emphasis is on the factors affecting movement and the study of the relationship between acceleration, velocity, and displacement. Dr. Pakdemirli: Fluid Mechanics is the motion of fluids while the dynamics is the motional solid bodies. In fluid mechanics, you will investigate the motion of the floats. The float is named as gases or liquids on this both sides. So, the motions addresses the states of these forms of materials are important for us fluid mechanics. And we also have the strength of materials and in the strength of materials. We investigate if the structure in the years is given loading condition. Can it perform, operates safety under the given loading conditions? Also in mechanical vibrations, we investigate the motion back to the periodic motion. And in the periodic motion, the mechanisms that we investigate in mechanical engineering, they are moving, they are moving parts. So, these induce some type of vibrations. For example, if you have an engine, run the engine. When starts running there are vibrations.
