The Amount of Imaging Studies Needed In this era, breast conservation, we now have more and better imaging studies like breast MRI, ultrasound and digital mammography to determine extent of disease which is really important to me as a surgeon as well as are there other areas within my infect breast that might have cancer. And we can never lose sight of the other breast. So often it takes us a few weeks to get all of these imaging studies done. Again, remember two things, one time is our friend and two we only want to go the operating room once and we want to know exactly what were going for, plus the decision making process as to the type of surgery that a patient is going to have should be a joint decision making process between the surgeon and the patient. It’s rare that I have or say, “You absolutely need and fill in the blank.” I always trying to make it a joint decision making process between myself and the patient.
