Read the full transcript »
Hi, everybody! I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you are pregnant and over the age of 35, your doctor may suggest having an amniocentesis test. This type of test is performed to check if your baby has a chromosomal disorder like Down's syndrome. It is usually performed at 15 to 17 weeks of pregnancy and involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid to examine the baby's DNA. Now though the test is relatively safe and beneficial, it just carries a 0.5% risk of causing a miscarriage. So, talk to your doctor to see if the benefit of undergoing the test outweighs the risk.
