Breastfeeding can influence sexual function in a number of ways. The most common being pain during sexual relations because while breastfeeding, in fact a woman’s estrogen levels are very low and those low estrogen levels cause some thinning and changes of the tissues around the vaginal opening and it make sex more painful. In addition, women may have some conflict between the breast as a sexual organ and the breast as a nurturing organ, and that can have one of two effects – for some women there is heightened sexuality or sexual feelings while they are nursing which can make a woman feel guilty or uncomfortable, and for some women they see the breast as purely nurturing and no longer want their breast seen as sexual objects or potential erotic erogenous zones.
