What Advantages Do Patients Have When They Arrive At The New, Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center At John Wayne Cancer Institute? Dr. Alice Chung: The breast center has a specific layout that I think is especially advantageous to women who are coming in for a visit. The clinic itself where the patient sees the surgeon is located in the same facility literally just next door to the radiology department. So, any films that we, as surgeons, want to review that belong to the patient, we can just walk over across the hallway to the radiologist and go over the films with the radiologist while they’re there. And that’s a real advantage to patients because a lot of women who are going somewhere where you don’t have that kind of a set up, there is not as much communication between the radiologist and the surgeon. So, I think that that is a real advantage to Breast Center. In addition, our pathology department is located very nearby and the pathologists come up and actually review slides with us right then and there. They help us with specific types of biopsies, as do the radiologist and someone can get their comprehensive consultation or care all in one day with multiple specialists from different teams all working on the same person at the same time. So, I think that the main advantage of coming to a place like our comprehensive Breast Center is that they can get expert opinions from different specialties all the at the same place, all at the same time.
