The Advantages of Small Satellites Engineers at Surrey Satellite Technology have spent over 20 years building small earth observation satellites for a variety of countries. This idea is to put a constellation of satellites each smaller than the fridge into orbit around the earth to help emergency services and relief teams respond better to natural disasters. Six countries are involved, each building its own satellite at Surrey. Algerian engineers are putting the finishing touches to this space craft, ALSET 1. Conventional satellites pass a particular point on earth only every few days. But at work of small satellites in low orbit however can beam back constantly updated images of an unfolding disaster like this Mekong River flood in Cambodia from September 2000. The advantage of small satellites is that they can be manufactured much more quickly and much cheaper. Therefore, they can simply afford to put more of them into orbit. This project will be called the Disaster Monitoring Constellation.
