The Advancements in Radiation Therapy Technology One of the things that we have been able to do with the use of high-speed computers and the latest radiation machines is to carefully shape the radiation beam, and how that pertains to the treatment of breast cancer is that many times we can treat the entire breast without damaging any of the surrounding tissue, most notably the lung, the rib cage and the heart, which is very important to a lot of patients who also get chemotherapy as a part of their treatment. We are able to custom shape the beams. We are able to take into account individual anatomy as all women are shaped differently. Some have breasts that are closer to the heart than others, and in the past it would have been very difficult for us to treat the entire breast without damaging part of the heart. Now we are able to custom shape the beam to avoid that.
