Are there surgical treatment options available for sleep apnea? Dr. McPherson: There are a number of surgical options available for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. One aspect is, if the patient has nasal or upper airway obstruction due to large tonsils then treatment of those areas by resection of excess tissue in the nose and also removal of the tonsils or tonsillectomy could be very helpful. Sometimes surgery on the soft palate, what’s the called the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which is resection of the tissue in the back of the throat, can also be helpful. There are more extensive procedures that can be performed as well, and people who are intolerant of other forms of treatment that involved either moving the lower and upper jaw forward to increase the space behind the time, which prevents the, or corrects the underlying obstruction, and there is an advancement of some of the throat structures which is a slightly smaller procedure that can also be done, which can be helpful. These last procedures however are not commonly used.
