Host: With distressful shopping trips and the endless stream of parties, you know staying slim during the holiday season can be pretty tough. But Fitness Magazine has some easy tips for you and nutrition editor, Sarah Wells is here to fill us in on all the secrets. Welcome back Sarah. Sarah: Thanks for having me. Host: It’s perfect timing to have you hear. There’s a lot of food around. Sarah: Exactly, they’re gearing up. Host: I like the magazine you guys said, for every temptation trap, there’s a trim tactic to go along with it. Sarah: It’s a tongue twister. Host: It is. But let’s talk about the mall first. Dangerous, danger zone. Sarah: It is, you’re kind of a captive audience and that food court is right there and you can smell it throughout the entire place. Host: It’s calling me. Sarah: But the first thing is go early if you can. You’ll not only beat the lines but also pizza and hamburgers just don’t smell that great at 10:00 a.m. Plus, we’ve eaten a healthy breakfast before you went so you’re not going to be hungry. So get in, get out. Host: You guys also suggest doing something like getting a pedicure instead of a cookie. Sarah: Right so when like the line’s getting to you and you’re just thinking I just need something sweet to get me through, treat yourself to a calorie splurge like a pedicure when you start to equate food as reward, you’re setting yourself up to make unhealthy choices. Host: Now, what’s this whole deal about dining, taking a break and savoring a real meal inside of the mall itself? Sarah: Right, skip the food court and instead go to one of the real restaurants that you find in almost every mall because when you sit down and eat, you’re going to savor it. It’s a quieter, calmer environment plus they usually have healthier choices. You can get a salad. You’ll probably be able to get some salmon or something so you make healthier choices. Host: That makes sense too. Now, you think you’re safe when you leave the mall but you’re not. There’s the parties that you have to go to and there’s always always food out there and it’s so tempting so what do you do in that situation. Sarah: First go in and work the room. Don’t just heat straight to the buffet or the bar. Make friends, you know, chat up people you haven’t seen in a while. Plus, when you’re chatting, it’s actually quite difficult to hold a glass in one hand and your cocktail napkin in the other and kind of try to work it that way. So it’ll prevent you from overdoing it off the bat and then when you are going to go over and start to make some food choices, stick to three. Three is the limit. Even if they’re not the healthiest three, like you don’t want the shrimp cocktail, you want something a little bit tastier. That’s fine but if you’ve limited yourself to three, you’re not going to go overboard. Host: But you even have kind of similar tips for the drinks too. It’s not just for the food right? Sarah: No, same thing for the cocktail. There are skinnier cocktail. Champagne for instance by itself is skinnier than if you’re going to get like a vodka tonic or anything fruity. Host: Right, this is where Fitness Magazine always makes us feel guilty because they say book like a workout session afterwards or the next day. Sarah: It’s true, if you’ve worked out that day even, when you get to the party, you wouldn’t want to undo all the hardwork you’ve done sweating it out beforehand. Plus if you’ve arranged something for the morning after, you don’t want to be so full or hung over that you can’t do the workout. Host: What about the break room. In a lot of people’s offices, that’s where people dump all the food that they don’t want. Sarah: They don’t want at home because they don’t want to eat it. So first work out. Because if you work out at your lunch hour, chances are, you’re going to come back to your desk and those pastries are not going to look so tempting because you just did all the hard work or enlist a f
