Hi, I’m Cheryl Forber, nutritionist for the biggest loser and author of Simple Swaps. Thousands of people are inspired by the dramatic weight loss they see every week in the Biggest Loser but most people are so overwhelmed and they really don’t know where to begin at health and that’s the promise of the book simple swaps. I wanted to give ideas for really small changes that people can make at home everyday that add up to a really big difference. A perfect example is instead of using a sandwich spread, I recommend using avocado instead because three slices or one ounce of avocado has only 50 calories and it has 250 different nutrients and vitamins. I’m making a little avocado butter here just adding a little bit of lime and a little salt and pepper and it makes a perfect spread to put on the sandwich instead. And it also the avocados for Mexico are available now so it’s a perfect choice. Another simple swap is instead of using bacon on a salad and a sandwich with your eggs in the morning using Canadian bacon. It has much lower sodium and fat healthier choice all the way around. A really big change but a simple thing to remember is no white stuff. Not white flour, white sugar, white rice, white pasta and a perfect way to implement this is instead of having white pasta with lots of sauce and cheese, we would instead choose whole grain pasta with a lot of vegetables, a little bit of sauce and you still have room to put a little cheese on top. Everybody loves a cheese. Another simple swap is instead of roasting white potatoes which we don’t include on the plan choosing a variety of different root vegetables instead, adding a little bit of oil and some fresh herbs and seasonings and you have a perfect simple swap. And finally for dessert which we can still have every now and then instead of having a frozen yogurt which is loaded with sugar and a sugary fruity sauce, instead we’ve chosen greek style yogurt which is very high in protein and topping it instead with fresh fruit.
