Host: Should I allow my child to watch or listen to news reports related to school shootings? Dr. Hayley Sherwood: Disaster research has shown that images and messages on television are frightening and can cause a host of stress related problems. At times, even viewing coverage of a school shooting can cause someone to become a secondary victim and suffer physical and emotional problems. Young children should not be exposed to television, radio or internet reports that are discussing or showing carnage. It is important however not to say, I don't want you to watch this, which only heightens curiosity and anxiety. Instead find alternative activities.
