Speaker: Is a strong friendship a good basis for an intimate relationship? Toni Coleman: A strong friendship is a good basis for an intimate relationship. It is one of the key elements of an intimate relationship, and it is very important. That being said, too often people feel that if they are best friends. If they can relate on this level then, it must follow that they could move into an intimate and romantic relationship. And I get often a lot of mail about this, a lot of questions related to this from people who talk about having a friend crush and having this soulmate relationship with this friend, and wondering why it isn't moving to the next level. And probably what's going on there is that they only have the friendship which again is important, but there are something else in that mix that just isn't there for them. And therefore, the relationship can't progress, and it does cause a lot of confusion for people who feel that this should be the primary thing when the person that they are interested in might also put a very heavy emphasis and a very strong physical attraction or perhaps enjoys this person, but just isn't intellectually stimulated by this person. And so it's just not going to be the right chemical mix.
