Male Speaker: We discussed constipation a bit more detailed we have done in past. Dr. Martin D. Fried: The most common cause of constipation in pediatrics and adolescence is inadequate fiber intake. If you want to figure out how much fiber somebody needs you could use this little thumb, 10 grams plus their age. So like a 15 year old need about 25 grams of fiber. Male Speaker: Could that be also for the adult the same number? Dr. Martin D. Fried: Adults about 30, 35 milligrams you could cap out of 30, 35 milligrams. Male Speaker: So, any danger of too much fiber? Dr. Martin D. Fried: If you get too much fiber you could get a lot of gas, lot of bloating from the bacteria, if you get bacteria-- Male Speaker: There are some fiber products that some people take, is that a good idea or is natural better? Dr. Martin D. Fried: I prefer natural I prefer from fresh fruits and vegetables, vegetables are higher in fiber than our fruits. Beans are extremely high in fiber. One serving of black beans has about 14 grams of fiber which is almost half a days. Male Speaker: Or if we have a two week old that's not going easily what could you do to help that particular age group? Dr. Martin D. Fried: Well most of the two year old, I'm sorry. Male Speaker: Two weeks old. Dr. Martin D. Fried: Two week old that are not going to the bathroom, there is a lot of different reasons you have to first make sure that these is adequate intake. Because if there are not taking in enough calories they going to be using the entire formula for growth and development because they grow in so quickly. So the first thing is to make sure that they are getting adequate intake. I don't like giving prune juice or a fruit juice to child that young, I would probably want to increase their intake or may be try changing their formula, if there are casein predominant formula that does empty slower from the stomach than a 100% whey or casein pre-digested formula. Male Speaker: What about soy based formulism? Dr. Martin D. Fried: Soy based formulism can empty faster than casein. Male Speaker: So whey based formula or a soy based form a tendency to help the kid with constipation. Dr. Martin D. Fried: Yes. Male Speaker: Let's go out the other ways some real cases to where if some kids get constipated and soya beans formula... Dr. Martin D. Fried: Yes. Male Speaker: Usually in the possible that happens so but generally it's the other direction. Dr. Martin D. Fried: Yes. Male Speaker: You see in a positive way.
