Derrick Artis: The benefits of UV blocking contact lenses is, it prevents the eye from being exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation. We know that high levels of ultraviolet radiation over time can cause damage to the cornea, damage to the lens internally and even damage to the external conjunctiva around the eye. Christina Schnider: Even though UV blocking sunglasses block almost 100% of light that comes from straight ahead, there are rays that enter from the side. And these rays may actually be more dangerous to the eyes than those that enter form straight ahead. And UV blocking contact lenses block those peripheral rays. Our Acuvue Advance and Acuvue Oasys brand contact lenses have the highest level of UV blocking. They have also been awarded the Seal of Acceptance by the American Optometric Association as the only contact lenses to provide sufficient UV blocking to be considered eligible for that field. Male Speaker: Acuvue Advance and Acuvue Oasys block 90% of the UVA exposure and 99% of UVB exposure. Derrick Artis: Acquiring the American Optometric Association's seal of approval was huge for us. It does two things. One, it educates the consumer about the importance of ultraviolet radiation. The second benefit is for the practitioner, the clinician that prescribes our lens. They know that if it meets the AOA, American Optometric Association standards, that that lens will protect the eye from damage through the ultraviolet radiation. Christina Schnider: As part of a standard eye exam, I think it's important for patients to talk to their doctors about what the best UV protection is for them.
