Prevention's Health Hearsay: Baby Carrots Dr. Travis Stork: If it’s a fact, we’ll back it. If it’s fiction we’ll debunk it. In medicine we have to separate the real remedies from the old wives’ tales, so Prevention Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Liz Vaccariello joins us now to talk about one of the most popular columns in your magazine is called “Health Hearsay”. Liz Vaccariello: Yes, sir. You know we get those internet rumors and those scary emails too and part of Prevention’s mission is to go to our experts and find the science and set the record straight. Dr. Travis Stork: And you’ve essentially become an expert in your own right. Liz Vaccariello: Well. Dr. Travis Stork: Because you’ve covered so many stories. Liz Vaccariello: After years and years of 160 pages every month of information in new science kind of well an osmosis you can become an expert yourself. Dr. Travis Stork: Well, I love this and I love the column because my mom is always asking me these questions. Liz Vaccariello: Right. Dr. Travis Stork: And they’re always truth to her and I have to debunk half the time. Well, Prevention Magazine reader sent this email. “I heard that baby carrots are made from rotten or deformed carrots and are preserved in a solution of water and chlorine. Is this true?” Liz Vaccariello: Well, we talked to a microbiologist and found that it’s not exactly true. Baby carrots are rinsed, not preserved in a special chlorine wash but it’s something that’s recommended by the Food and Drug Administration to get rid of E. coli and salmonella. Dr. Travis Stork: Right so it’s FDA approved and it’s safe and other precut produces also washed from this solution, right. Liz Vaccariello: Yeah, these frozen vegetables, a fruit salad if you buy at the grocery store. It’s all part of us to keep us safe. And in terms of the rotten part of carrots, not true. These baby carrots are riddled down from misshapen carrot roots. So they have the same nutrient profile as the picture perfect ones you find in the Farmer’s Market, right?
