Sherri Dmyterko: The greatest fear for women who have been treated for early breast cancer is to have their cancer return. Genevieve Lefebvre is a breast cancer survivor. Genevieve Lefebvre: I think, when you have gone through a cancer, one cancer, you just hope it's the only one. Sherri Dmyterko While most early stage tumors can be removed by surgery, this does not necessarily mean that the patient is cured. Preventing recurrence is often a primary goal in breast cancer management. Now landmark results from the ATAC 100 trial, one of the world's largest and longest running studies in post-menopausal women with early breast cancer, offer a new hope. Dr Andre Robidoux is a professor in surgery at the University of Montreal, and a Canadian investigator with the ATAC 100 Clinical Trial. Dr Andre Robidoux: For the first time, Arimidex has been shown to be increasingly better than Tamoxifen, giving women better chances of surviving during cancer, and even after their treatment has finished. Sherri Dmyterko: Overall, women in the study taking a Arimidex were 24% less likely to have their cancer come back, compared with those taking Tamoxifen. Dr Andre Robidoux: If we can stop cancer from recurring, we will save more lives. The data shows that Arimidex reduces recurrence, and minimizes life threatening side effects. Most important, the effect of Arimidex continues beyond the five years standard treatment period. Genevieve Lefebvre: It's just a very good news, and I am very happy. Sherri Dmyterko: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. More than 22,000 women are diagnosed every year killing 5,300.
