Dr. Jan Brandes: Patients can help teach their doctors about the impact that migraine has on their lives. Female Speaker: As with anything in life, communication is the key to everything. Female Speaker: You should tell you doctor your symptoms; you should tell your doctor how often you're having your migraines. You should tell your doctor how it's interfering with your life. Female Speaker: I explained to my doctor that it's not just getting the migraines but the fear of getting the migraines that interrupts my life. Female Speaker: I told my doctor that even when I wasn't having a migraine, I was worrying about when the next migraine was coming. Female Speaker: I basically told him that migraines are really affecting my quality of life, and that I really wanted something that would prevent them. Dr. Jan Brandes: I think it's a great thing for patients to be their own advocates about getting the kind of treatment they need for their migraines. If they're not asked something that they think is important to them, they should tell. Female Speaker: Before I went to see doctor Brandes I had a notebook full of notes. Female Speaker: Keep the journal to document how often you're having headaches, and if they're severe and they are intruding in your life, you've got a problem and it can't be ignored. Female Speaker: I realized it was time to do something. So I began to research on the Internet, and that's how I found out about TOPAMAX. Female Speaker: I told my doctor that I really wanted to be on this medicine that I had researched it. Female Speaker: And I thought it's worth giving it a shot. That's a proactive way to go. Female Speaker: It's all about self-awareness; you have to become aware of what's going on with your body. Female Speaker: It felt great when I marched into his office and finally I took my life back. Female Speaker: Walking out of the doctor's office, I felt really hopeful that maybe I'd found the medication that was going to help me and so I'm going with that.
