Pregnancy Skin Care Skin Care Products Hello. I’m Dr. Neal Schultz and welcome to DermTV. A very important question that arises frequently during pregnancy is what skin care products are safe? The reality is almost all skin care products are safe to use at any time during pregnancy and particularly, during that very sensitive first trimester with the exception of retinoids. Retinoid are products like Retin-A, Renovo, retinol, and other derivatives which come from those products like Tazorac, Adapalene and Differin and other products you used either for facial rejuvenation or to treat acne. Retinoids have been shown to cause some malformations in rodents, not the human beings. But just because we want to be as conservative as possible, no Retin-A related products and no retinoids during pregnancy. Everything else that is available over-the-counter is safety use during pregnancy and nothing else has ever been demonstrated to cause any problems with humans. The interesting thing to me is that so often women will question particular skin care products while they continue to use moisturizers and cleansers with all sorts of exotic products that nobody has ever tested during pregnancy. The good news is regardless which news we’re talking about, common skin care products or more exotic skin care products. The barrier function of your skin which is there to keep the outside world out and to keep the inside world in is very effective all the time even during pregnancy. So, with the exceptions that I mentioned use any skin care products during pregnancy and you can be assured it will have no effect on the outcome of your pregnancy.
