Female Speaker: We are talking with that to be Dr. Jorn Dyhrberg about Omega-3 fatty acids and we have discussed Dr. Dyhrberg cognitive health. What are some other areas that the Omega-3s would affect? Dr. Jorn Dyhrberg: Yeah, actually, but one aspect has got a lot of attention recently, and that’s the probable affect, I have to say probable, because it is not solid enough yet, but it seems as an addition of EPA/DHA to boys and girls, especially young boys with the disorder called ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is a disorder afflicting a rather high percentage of youngsters. Some say up to 8-9 %. I do not know, I feel that’s a lot, but as substantial, making them hyperactive, not concentrate on their homework and yes, decreasing their learning process. And actually can be very tough and be treated with medication that is tough medication recently and things like hash. And then comes the aspect of, could that also at least in part be due to what I have said before, our diet does not include very much long chained Omega 3 fatty acids. So there have been some scientists going in and investigating whether supplementing to boys and girls, mostly boys with this disorder with the fish oil, could that improve the health and actually a british study and quite recently an American study, came up with rather promising results, giving these boys over a three months period as supplement of the fish oil. The capsules did decrease many of the severe symptoms, especially improve their attention their learn, their reading abilities, spelling abilities and then, this is a complex of symptoms that were measured and they found a significant overall improvement in the ADHD symptoms. Female: Just by supplementation? Dr. Jorn Dyhrberg : By supplementation. To me, as a Profession of nutrition again indicating, that the western diet is too low in the long chain polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids.
