Jennifer: This is a place for tiny hands, tiny feet and big prayers. A full term pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. Babys here are born as early as 24 weeks that early arrivals bring a bundle of problems such as slow development in growth. Now these hands wrinkled by time may shape the future for these babies. Maria Hernandez-Reif: And baby should receive massage receive have more organized sleep they discharged earlier from the hospital and developmentally they do better. Jennifer: Pura is a volunteer of this baby she is massaging who was born 9 weeks early 3 weeks and many massages later he is gained nearly a quarter pound. Maria: If we found that babys who receive massage gained 47% more weight on a daily basis then babies who receive standard care. Jennifer: Babys get 3-15 minute massages each day for up to 10 days. The massage is also seem to help the elderly who give them. Maria: And we found that there pressure was reduced their anxiety was also alleviated this stress hormonal levels came down and they complaint of fewer medical problems during the time that they were working with the babys. Jennifer: The massages are a highlight of Pura as week. Maria: She says she is pretty elderly but as long as she has health she will continue to do this type of work.
