Physical Fitness at the Workplace - Learn about R.S.I That’s enough for today. My neck and shoulders are killing me. It’s no wonder everyday millions of people feel the aches and pains brought on by long hours sitting or standing at a desk terminal or computer. Muscle tension, stiffness or strain in the neck, the shoulders, the arms, the wrists, hands, back and even legs are common complaints which can lead to RSI, Repetitive Strain Injuries. What is RSI? RSI is an umbrella term for group of injuries caused by repetitive movements or excessive demands on the body’s muscles, tendons and joints and nerves such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, shoulder bursitis, low back pain just to name a few. And these are injuries unfortunately don’t happen overnight. They develop over an extended period and by the time it’s realized severe damage has occurred. So how can we avoid these injuries so common in the workplace and therefore increase productivity and decrease health cost? Well knowledge is extremely important. Most RSI injuries can be prevented by applying some small changes to our work environment and by including regular stretching periods throughout our day.
