EmpowHer Is the magnetic resonance (MR) guided focused ultrasound painful? Dr. Suzanne D. LeBlang, M.D. Neuroradiologist During the MR guided focused ultrasound treatment, the patients are fully awake during the procedure. We get some conscious sedation to make you comfortable in the MRI table so that you don’t move during the procedure but you’re fully awake. Some people feel a mild period cramping type of pain. Some people feel heat inside their pelvis. We have a few methods by which we can keep track of how painful the procedure is for you on a scale of one to ten we ask the patients to grade their discomfort if any after each sonication meaning after every 30 second burst of energy that we place inside the fibroid. If the patients feel any burning or tingling in their skin or going down the leg then I can then angle the beams slightly differently so they can avoid that discomfort.
