Cherry: Summer is back and for many Canadians that means hitting the road for a lots outdoor family fun and for a lot of us that means grabbing fat filled food on the go, but the dynamic duo of Janet and Greta Podleski, creators of three healthy and fun cookbooks and hosts of the popular TV series Eat, Shrink, and be Merry want to show Canadians that if they understand there cholesterol ratio, summer eating can be delicious. Janet Podleski:I know a lot of Canadians think its impossible to eat healthy in the summer time and I think that it’s actually the perfect time to eat healthfully because you’ve got fresh, local seasonal produced fruits and vegetable that you can do a lot with just needs some good recipes. Cherry: With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death and disability in Canada, accounting for 36% of all deaths nationally, Janet and Greta want Canadians to know that the cholesterol ratio, the ratio between the total and the HDL cholesterol in the body is among the best predictors of the risk of having hearth attack or stroke. Greta Podleski:You don’t have to give up your favorite foods to eat more healthfully and there’s lot of great tips and substitutions you can make to you families favorite recipe to keep all of the flavor but to lower the bad fat. For example, using something like heart healthy olive oil in place of saturated fat laid in mayonnaise and sour cream in salad dressings. Janet Podleski:I’d rather focus on the positive things that you can add to you diet to help your cholesterol, there's a lot of great foods you can add, mostly fiber, fiber, fiber, fiber is the keyword, having things like apples and pears, maybe some flack seeds in some of your salads. Not so great addition that help with the good cholesterol, cold water fish and fish oils and garlic is the secret ingredient for lowering the cholesterol as well.
