Diabetes and Children: Nutrition Laura Nance: When the child comes in with early diagnosed diabetes whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2, I took about the impact on our bad sugars. And that might mean that it needs some lifestyle modification, diet modification or we needed this fear out whether eating in order to much your insulin to there food. So, with children what we do is we talk about the different food groups, the carbohydrates, the proteins and the fats. And we talked about which ones affected blood sugar and we know that a carbohydrates affect the blood sugar and we try to identify which food groups are on carbohydrates and if you look at the pyramid we typically use the pyramid and we know that the grains, the fruits, the milks and sweets had the biggest impact on blood sugar. So, those are things that kids need to either watch or make sure that they know how much they are eating in order to take there insulin. Is there a standard nutrition rule that applies to all children with diabetes? Laura Nance: It kind of depends on whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes where my education goes. If it is Type 1 diabetes were typically not changing the current diet regimen. We are just matching insulin towards our current diet. We will— there are some exceptions like we are saying no sweet drinks, we need to drink only sugar free products at this point. Be careful for your portion on sweet foods but for the most part I’m not changing too much what the child is eating with Type 1 diabetes we are just matching the insulin towards what they are eating. They have to be able to carbohydrate count recognize which foods do have impact in blood sugars in order to be able to give the appropriate amount of insulin. A child with Type 2 diabetes, there are some diet modifications that were making typically we see Type 2 diabetes present as an overweight child so we need to— we are encouraging more physical activity I’m letting them know what foods have a greater impact on blood sugars and we are limiting those a little bit more than we are in the child with Type 1 diabetes. Particularly the sweets with Type 2 diabetes we are limiting those a little bit more because typically, that’s part of there issue or the reason why they are presenting overweight.
