Mayo Clinic's Patient Profiles My name is Dr. Paul Magtibay and I am the Chair of the Department of Medical and Surgical Gynecology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. I am trained in obstetrics and gynecology, but subspecialty trained in gynecologic oncology and urogynecology. My particular interests are in oncology at this point with an emphasis on ovarian cancer and in robotic surgical procedures. When we talk about robotics really all that it is, is that of a fancy laparoscopic procedure meaning, we are doing this minimally invasively through small incisions similar to how people are used to having their or know about having their gall bladder removed, and these same small incisions are used where we attach robotic arms and the robot is really just a way to facilitate a laparoscopic dissection. It has multiple advantages over that of laparoscopy including 3D vision meaning, the surgeon when they are looking at the screen or in the video camera they see depth perception, where with standard laparoscopy we only get a 2D plane of view. The instruments in robotics articulate, meaning that with straight-stick laparoscopy, our instruments are very limited. They are rigid. They could only move based on the fulcrum of the trocar itself where with robotics, the instruments will, I can put them in and they will actually articulate much like that of the human wrist, thereby giving me a great deal more dexterity and accuracy in performing the surgical dissection. Mayo Clinic Arizona focuses on the Southwest part of the United States, principally that of the Phoenix metropolitan area but we have a number of patients from the Las Vegas region, Albuquerque in New Mexico, but anywhere in the nation that we have contracts people have the opportunity to come and visit us and receive their care here. Mayo Clinic actually serves patients from all walks of life; from multiple different income levels, multiple different ethnic groups and multiple different insurance contract groups. Our particular interest in gynecology, at least for me, is in oncology and we offer unique oncologic services, in particular. But I think aren’t available to that aren’t afforded by other institutions in our area.
