Jim Weiler: Hi! This is Jim Weiler with Piedmont Therapeutic Massage in the Washington DC area and a couple of key points for when you have your client facedown or whats referred to as being in the prone position. When you are doing massage on your partner at home and the person is lying facedown, it is best to have some type of a pillow or whats referred to as bolster underneath their feet. You can them have lift up, place it in to position and then they are getting adequate support for when you are doing your various Swedish massage techniques whether its Effleurage, Petrissage, Spreading or Tapotement. You dont have to go to the trouble and the expense of getting an actual professional bolster, you can again use any type of a pillow, regular bed or sleeping pillow, or you an even use rolled up towels. Another key point, when using a massage table and doing massage at home for friends or family members, most massage tables these days have whats referred to as face cradle in which the person can lie facedown and still be able to breathe through the opening. This is a much more ergonomically correct and beneficial position, rather than the person having to turn their head to one side or the other, while lying facedown and getting the back or the posterior of the body massaged. While applying the lubricant, you want to keep the hand in contact with the person, bring the lubricant to your hand, not your hand to the lubricant. Provides added flow and continuity and allows the person to relax more fully. Once the lubricant is applied, you can apply any of the various Swedish massage techniques and you can work from either side of the table, whichever is most comfortable for you. You can also from the head of the table as well. Wile its not done much in the professional setting, when doing massage for friends or family members at home, it is completely appropriate for you to climb up on to the table and on to your partner in order to get enough pressure and again have proper body mechanics. We have the demonstration of that, effleuraging up along each side of the spine, making sure not apply pressure directly on the spine. Again, getting feedback from your partner will help to make it very relaxing and enjoyable experience. Side using the palms and the hands, the knuckles can be used as well.
