Q: Can you lower your risks of having a stroke? Female: There are modifiable risk factors or non-modifiable risk factors. Non-modifiable risk factors are the factors that you’re born with. Some people have hypercholesteremia that they just—it’s genetic, they can’t control. But sometimes, you can control your cholesterol with diet and exercise. Blood pressure you can control with your medication and your weight, and smoking. Smoking doubles your risk factor for stroke. You can’t change your race, you can’t change your sex, those things you can’t change. But you could change your diet and your exercise habits and not smoke.
