Jennifer: Beverly gets in says it’s been tough living with Lupus a disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own cells. Beverly: Its change my life a lot. Jennifer: The condition caused Lesions like these inside her mouth and on her face. Beverly: Right on my fore head and like right in here and here on my face. Jennifer: Even make up wouldn’t cover the spots completely. Beverly: I feel like everybody was looking at me. You know when, went I look at me; half I looked that was my face. Jennifer: Doctor says sun exposure can trigger the Lesions. Joseph: It doesn’t have to be sun exposure like sitting on the beach it can be just be trips of the car that add up and produce this kind of problem. Jennifer: When sun screen and medications not enough doctors are turning to the drug thalidomide. Joseph: And it really has proven to be a life saver from that doing a large extend point and patients would very disfiguring skin disease that fail traditional therapy. Jennifer: Once used as a sleep aid thalidomide was band after causing severe birth effects and babies born to mothers who used it. It has few negative side effects in this group and one very positive effect on Beverly. Beverly: Now I don’t have those Lesions or the sores anymore and makes me feel more comforting about myself. Jennifer: Beverly says that makes the outs side a much friendlier place. This is Jennifer Mathews reporting.
