Dr. Christina Johns: My name is Dr. Christina Johns and today we are talking about how to survive the flu. So what is the flu anyway? Well, the flu is a collection of symptoms that are caused by a bunch of different viruses; influenza A and B are two of the most common ones. Fever, runny nose, cough, congestion, headache, muscle aches, all of these things can be the flu. Influenza means that you have flu, but just because you have flu symptoms, it doesn't mean that you have influenza. They are two really different things. Lots of different viruses can cause flu like symptoms. In general, they can last anywhere from 48 hours to 7 days and it's no fun while it lasts. Other illnesses can cause similar symptoms as the flu like strep throat or a sinusitis, and those require different treatments. So it's really important that you see your doctor to make sure that you have what you think you have. So now that we know a little bit about what the flu virus is and if you think you may have it, let's move on to how you can feel better.
