Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody! I am Melanie Raposo, and welcome to Mommy's Minute. Growing a baby is hard work, and you need the right fuel to do the job. Starting a prenatal vitamin even before you are pregnant ensures that your body is the right environment for a growing baby. Make sure to look for supplements that don't contain more than the recommended daily intake. Some vitamins, like vitamin A, can be toxic to your baby in high concentrations. It's also important to look for these supplements, like calcium, folic acid, and vitamin C. Omega-3 is also very good for your baby's brain and eye development and can ward off depression. When you are pregnant, your iron intake also has to double, so make sure you are getting a lot of that as well. Ask your doctor to recommend a prenatal vitamin based on your needs and eating habits. Eating a healthy variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat proteins is also a good start.
