Learn about the Place Value of Digits in Decimals In this video lesson, let’s learn about the place value of digits. The problem asks us to find the place value of each digit in the number 3.145, 3.145. The place value diagram that we should use is given on the right. We look at the decimal point and then we look at the digit to the first position or the first place to the right of the decimal point is named tenths and has got a value of 0.1. To the second place to the right is named a hundredth and the value is 0.01 and so on similarly digits to the left of the decimal points are ones, tenths, hundredths and thousandths and the value is one, tenth, hundredth and thousandth. So let’s use this knowledge or this diagram to figure out the value of each of these digits. So the four digits that we have are 3.145. So let’s create a place value table. And what I’m going to do is put down the number. I’m going to put down the place value and I’m going to put down the value. In the first case, the number is three, the place value if I look at it, it is one spot or one place to the left of the decimal point so the place value is one, which is ones and the actual value is one so it is one times the number which is three equals three. Similarly to the next digit is the number one, the place value it’s one digit to the right of ones place to the right of the decimal point which is tenths and the value is 0.1 so this 0.1 times the number which is one so it is 0.1. Let’s create a little bit of extra space. The third digit is four and the forth one is five. For four the place is second to the right of the decimal spot so it’s the hundredths and the value is 0.01 times four which is 0.04 and the fifth one, the digit five is in the place called thousandths, thousandths is right here, third digit to the right of the decimal spot the value is 0.0001 times five which is 0.005.
