Diabetes: Is depression prevalent in diabetes patients? Dr. Kim Pugh: Depression definitely is prevalent in diabetes. It in, whether its type one or type two, because you are basically having to totally change your lifestyle. And we see it all the time. Diabetes: Do you screen your diabetic patients for depression? Dr. Kim Pugh: I do, in fact always ask about sleep disturbances, lack of energy, early morning awakenings, when you fall asleep, you wake up, can't get back to sleep. And I would say probably one third of my diabetic patients are on medications to help with depression. And if the need be I encourage them to have counseling or see a psychiatrist.
