Hi, everybody! I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. A miscarriage is one of the most devastating things parents can go through. A miscarriage is a pregnancy that ends before 20 weeks and there are numerous causes for a miscarriage. A spontaneous miscarriage for instance occurs when the fetus is not developing properly or the placenta is not attached properly. It is important to also be aware of the risk factors that can increase your chance for a miscarriage. Smoking, poor nutrition, and hormonal insufficiency are just some of the factors to be aware of, but the good news is that many of these factors once identified can be treated and controlled. It is also important to be aware that not a every ache, cramp, or blood spot will lead to a miscarriage, but if you are experiencing abnormal bleeding, it's important to notify your doctor immediately. Having a miscarriage does not mean you can't have a normal pregnancy in the future, but it is recommended that you wait until after your first normal menstrual period before trying to have a baby again, just so you can give can your body a chance to heal.
